At Flowers of the Field, we grow and cut an ever-changing selection of beautiful seasonal flowers here at our Herefordshire nursery.

Late summer is one of the loveliest times to buy locally grown flowers. The cutting beds and greenhouses are still producing a wonderful variety of colour, shape and texture, with fresh flowers being cut regularly for bouquets, bunches, celebrations, events and florists.

FRESH FROM THE NURSERY

What we’re cutting now

There is still a wonderful choice of summer flowers coming from the nursery.

Our current selection includes Alstroemeria, Achillea, mixed Statice, Zinnias, Snapdragons, Gladioli and Eryngium, alongside other seasonal flowers as they become ready for cutting.

Our zinnias are looking particularly lovely, and we have planted another succession so that, weather permitting, we can keep enjoying and cutting them well beyond the traditional height of summer.

At the same time, work at the nursery is beginning to look ahead. We are moving things around and preparing for autumn and winter, when we will have Anemones and Ranunculus to cut.

A very dry summer — but plenty of flowers

This summer has certainly kept us busy.

The prolonged dry weather has meant an enormous amount of watering across the greenhouses and cutting beds. Flowers need more than simply plenty of water, though: careful watering, feeding and regular attention all make a difference to the quality and longevity of the stems we cut.

It has been hard work, but it means that as we move through late summer, we are still cutting a fantastic variety of fresh flowers right here at the nursery.

There have been some lovely surprises too. Our mixed Statice produced a wonderful flush earlier in the summer, was cut right back, and is already growing strongly again.

That is life at Flowers of the Field: while one crop is being cut, another is coming through behind it.

Flowers of the Field has been growing cut flowers in Herefordshire since 1989, and we continue to supply florists looking for fresh, locally grown seasonal stems.

Our availability changes throughout the growing season, which means there is always something different coming through.

At certain times of year, we also buy through the flower auction in Holland, allowing us to source flowers that we cannot grow ourselves, such as roses, and to offer a wider choice when required.

WEDDINGS & CELEBRATIONS

Flowers that belong to the season

Wedding enquiries happen throughout the year — sometimes years before the wedding itself — so we’re always happy to talk about future celebrations.

We can provide everything from bridal bouquets and buttonholes to table flowers and larger arrangements, with home-grown flowers incorporated wherever the season allows.

We also provide flowers for parties, dinners, anniversaries and other celebrations, whether you would like us to arrange them for you or would prefer bunches of beautiful seasonal flowers to arrange yourself.

We grow as much as we can here at Flowers of the Field, but at certain times of year we also buy through the flower auction in Holland. This allows us to source flowers that we cannot grow ourselves, such as roses, and means we can create the flowers you want while still using our own home-grown blooms wherever possible.

GROWN HERE IN HEREFORDSHIRE SINCE 1989

Flowers of the Field was established by Kathy Davies in 1989 and has been growing cut flowers for retail and wholesale customers ever since.

More than three decades later, we’re still doing what we have always done: growing, cutting and arranging beautiful flowers and giving our customers a friendly, personal service.

Most of our flowers begin just a few yards from where your bouquet is made, growing in our own greenhouses and cutting beds until they are ready to be picked. Where we cannot grow particular flowers ourselves, we can supplement our home-grown selection with flowers bought through the auction in Holland.

We think the combination of flowers grown here at the nursery, seasonal variety and more than three decades of experience makes Flowers of the Field rather special.

A Little Bit of Flowers of the Field History

Over the years, our flowers have travelled rather further than you might expect from our little corner of Herefordshire!

In the early 2000s, Flowers of the Field supplied the flowers and floral arrangements for the Hollywood film Unconditional Love, starring Kathy Bates, Rupert Everett, Lynn Redgrave, Jonathan Pryce and Julie Andrews. Parts of the film were shot right here in Weobley, with the village transformed into the fictional village of Lark.

We have also supplied flowers for ITV productions, and perhaps our most distinguished delivery of all was a consignment of our green carnations sent to HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother at Balmoral.

From Hollywood film sets and television productions to a royal residence — all from flowers grown here in Herefordshire.
